What is Blooming Together?

Blooming Together is a new approach to pregnancy care for women who are plus-size. It is designed to support women to have the healthiest pregnancy and birth possible through making positive lifestyle changes, and managing their weight. Read more about the Blooming Together Story here

If you are eligible to enrol in Blooming Together you will be provided with all of your antenatal (pregnancy) check-ups along with a program of group education and support. The group sessions will provide an opportunity to have an informal discussion around key interest topics in pregnancy and health with a small group of women who are plus-size and at a similar stage of pregnancy. The sessions will be facilitated by the same Midwife and Dietitian with a visiting Lactation Consultant and Physiotherapist at some sessions to answer all your burning questions.

Whilst you're at the group sessions you will have your antenatal check-ups with either your Midwife or GP/Obstetrician (from Fiona Stanley Hospital) in a private room. The group sessions and antenatal check-ups are provided at the same time so you won't need to attend any more appointments than you would if you were attending usual antenatal care.

There will be no additional costs associated with participating in the Blooming Together Program. All of the extra services provided as part of the program will be provided to you free of charge.

Please note: Blooming Together is not a diet or exercise program, it is a comprehensive lifestyle program within a program of quality midwifery-led maternity care in consultation with a GP/Obstetrician. We will also not be running exercise classes during the program but we will give some practical advice to support a gradual increase in physical activity.

Am I eligible to enrol in Blooming Together?

Blooming Together has been designed to assist women to have the healthiest pregnancy and birth possible and would most likely benefit all women in pregnancy. However, because it is a new program we need to determine whether it is likely to be effective in a specific target group before expanding to other groups. This process will form part of the Blooming Together Study to evaluate the program.

For this study we are looking for women who:

  • Are pregnant with their baby due in March or April 2016;
  • Are over 18 years of age;
  • Plus-size. That is, wear size 16 or above or have a BMI greater than 30kg/m2 (check with your GP if you're unsure or use this online BMI calculator);
  • Do not have any medical conditions that may complicate their pregnancy; and
  • Speak and understand conversational English

If you are unsure whether you are eligible to enrol in Blooming Together please contact Veronica or Jo (Blooming Together Midwives) on 0413 402 601.

What will the Blooming Together Study involve?

If you participate in the Blooming Together Program at Fiona Stanley Hospital you will also be participating in the Blooming Together Study being conducted by Telethon Kids Institute to evaluate the program. This process is important as we want to make sure that the Program meets your needs and that you find it effective in supporting you.

In order to evaluate the program Telethon Kids will ask you to:

  1. Complete some surveys to help to determine how acceptable and beneficial the program is for you
  2. Participate in a group discussion about your experience in the program after the final pregnancy group session when you are 34-36 weeks pregnant and following the 8-10 weeks post-birth session
  3. Consent to us collecting some information about your pregnancy and birth outcomes from your medical records.

Veronica or Jo (Blooming Together Midwives) will happily answer any questions so please don't hesitate to contact them on 0413 402 601.
